Canada's Lady's Slipper gold series launched in 1997 as the Royal Canadian Mint's first foray into five-nines (.99999) fine gold coinage — a purity level achieved by only a handful of mints worldwide at the time. The refining process required to reach that standard was developed at the Mint's Ottawa refinery and became a selling point applied across subsequent collector issues.
The Lady's Slipper itself is the provincial flower of Prince Edward Island, designated as such in 1947.
