Margit Kovács (1902–1977) was Hungary's most celebrated ceramic sculptor, whose work drew heavily on medieval Hungarian folk traditions and was exhibited across Europe during the Cold War — a rare form of cultural diplomacy the regime was willing to permit. This coin was issued in the centenary year of her birth. The National Bank produced it as part of a long-running commemorative silver program that has documented Hungarian cultural figures with considerably more consistency than most European central banks manage.
