Jenő Pál Wigner — born in Budapest in 1902, later Eugene Paul Wigner — shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of the atomic nucleus and elementary particles, particularly his application of symmetry principles. He left Hungary in 1926 and spent most of his career at Princeton, but also contributed foundational work to the Manhattan Project at the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory. Hungary has issued commemoratives for several of its diaspora scientists, a pattern driven partly by post-communist reclamation of figures the Soviet era treated ambivalently.
