This coin was issued to mark the 200th birth anniversary of János Bolyai, the Hungarian mathematician who independently developed hyperbolic geometry in the early 19th century — publishing his findings in 1832 as an appendix to his father Farkas Bolyai's mathematical treatise. The elder Bolyai had himself corresponded with Gauss on the subject for decades, and when Gauss dismissed the younger man's breakthrough as his own unpublished work, János never published again.
The Magyar Nemzeti Bank issued the piece in sterling silver as part of a long-running commemorative program honoring Hungarian scientific figures. Bolyai died in 1860, largely unrecognized.
