Issued as part of Hungary's ongoing county seat commemorative series, this piece marks Pécs — a city with one of the longest continuous urban histories in the Carpathian Basin, inhabited since Roman times as Sopianae and later a major center of early Christian culture. The 4th-century mausoleum complex beneath the modern city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the few such designations in Hungary.
Baranya county itself sits at Hungary's southernmost point, bordering Croatia — a border drawn in its current form after the Treaty of Trianon in 1920.
