The Kalka–Shimla Railway, a narrow-gauge line completed in 1903, climbs over 1,400 metres through the Himalayan foothills using 102 tunnels across roughly 96 kilometres of track. Bhutan has no railway of its own — a geographic and policy reality that makes this commemorative an odd choice, issued as part of a broader series honoring UNESCO World Heritage mountain railways of India. The series sold primarily to overseas collectors through government mint partnerships rather than through domestic circulation channels.
