Obverse description The aluminium centre features a detailed engraving of the Taedong Gate (Great East Gate) of Pyongyang, depicted in a traditional Korean architectural style with its characteristic multi-tiered pagoda roof set atop a stone fortification wall, surrounded by foliage in the lower field. The Korean legend 조선민주주의인민공화국중앙은행 (Central Bank of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) arcs around the upper portion of the centre field, while the denomination 30 WON appears in Latin script at the base of the centre. The brass outer ring is ornately decorated with a repeating pattern of stylised floral and foliate motifs in relief.
