The nuclear-powered icebreaker Ural is the third vessel of Project 22220, the largest class of nuclear icebreakers ever built. Construction began at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg in 2016, with Ural delivered to Rosatom's fleet in 2022 — the same year this coin was issued. The Project 22220 ships are designed to break ice up to 3 meters thick, keeping the Northern Sea Route navigable year-round as Russia pushes to commercialize Arctic shipping lanes under increasing geopolitical pressure.
