Siberian prisoner-of-war and internment camp scrip from the Russian Civil War period is among the most obscure of all emergency issues. The Wohlfahrts-Organisation — a welfare organization operating within the camp — issued these notes to facilitate internal exchange, a practice common in isolated camps where Russian currency was either unavailable or deliberately withheld from inmates. Batareynaya's location in Siberia placed it squarely in the chaos of 1919, when the region was contested between Kolchak's White forces and the advancing Red Army.
Almost nothing survives. Camp scrip of this type was issued in small quantities, redeemed within a closed system, and rarely left the wire.
