Bashkortostan is one of Russia's most ethnically distinct republics, home to the Bashkir people whose semi-nomadic culture survived Tsarist colonization, Soviet collectivization, and forced sedentarization across three centuries. The Republic of Bashkortostan declared sovereignty in October 1990, just ahead of the Soviet collapse.
