Bashkortostan is one of Russia's most ethnically distinct republics, home to the Bashkir people whose semi-nomadic culture survived Tsarist colonization, Soviet collectivization, and forced sedentarization across three centuries. This coin is part of the Bank of Russia's long-running regional series commemorating the constituent subjects of the Federation — a program that has produced well over a hundred silver issues since the 1990s and functions as much as a cataloging exercise in federal identity politics as a numismatic program.
The Republic of Bashkortostan declared sovereignty in October 1990, just ahead of the Soviet collapse.
