Dyrotz, a village in Brandenburg west of Berlin, hosted one of the German military's prisoner of war camps during the First World War. Camp-issued currency of this kind was a practical administrative solution — it prevented prisoners from accumulating Reichsmark that could fund escape attempts or be passed to outside contacts, while still permitting internal canteen and labor transactions.
Lagergeld from smaller facilities like Dyrotz was printed in limited runs and rarely survived the camp's closure. Most was recalled and destroyed at the armistice.
