Joseph I inherited the Austrian throne in 1705 while the War of the Spanish Succession was draining Habsburg finances at a punishing rate. Small silver fractions like this three-kreuzer piece bore the brunt of that fiscal pressure — debasement was incremental but measurable across the Munich mint's output during these years, with later strikes in the series showing noticeably reduced silver content relative to the earliest dies.
Joseph died of smallpox in April 1711 at thirty-two, ending a reign of just six years and cutting this Munich series short.
