Obverse description Left-facing effigy of Liberty as an Indian Princess, wearing a feathered coronet inscribed LIBERTY flanked by rows of beads, with flowing hair gathered at the nape and drop earring visible. The portrait, engraved by James B. Longacre, is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the headdress foliage and hair. The circular legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA runs along the periphery from lower left to lower right, separated from the effigy by a plain field. A fine toothed border frames the entire design.
