背面描述 Draped bust of King Ezana facing right, wearing a headcloth, with the royal titulary legend divided to either side of the effigy within a solid inner circle. The reverse portrait closely mirrors the obverse in style and composition, a common feature of Aksumite regal coinage, with the royal title ΒΑCIΛЄΥC flanking the bust. The field is plain beyond the inner circle, consistent with the compact flan of this denomination.

附加信息

Ezana ruled Aksum during one of the most consequential religious transitions in ancient African history — his conversion to Christianity in the 330s, likely facilitated by the Syrian monk Frumentius, made Aksum among the earliest states in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion. The coinage reflects that shift directly, with the disk and cross type marking the transition away from the pre-Christian crescent-and-disk symbolism that had defined Aksumite issues for decades.

Gold-plated silver was a deliberate economic compromise for the fractional denominations, reserving solid gold for the larger prestige issues intended for international Red Sea trade.
