Obverse description The Somali coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring a shield charged with horizontal lines and a five-pointed star, supported by two leopards rampant, with crossed spears and palm fronds at the base. The date '20 03' is divided by the supporters on either side of the shield. The circular legend 'SOMALI REPUBLIC' arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination '250 SHILLINGS' is inscribed along the lower rim. The design is struck in proof quality against a mirror-polished field, with a beaded inner border encircling the composition.

Additional information

Somalia's 2003 commemorative program was issued years after the country had ceased to function as a coherent state — the Transitional National Government nominally existed but controlled almost nothing, and coin contracts were farmed out to private minting firms operating entirely outside Mogadishu. This piece has no connection to the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup it postdates, nor to any Somali footballing tradition.
