Djibouti's central bank has periodically issued collector silver in denominations bearing no relation to anything in domestic circulation — the country's workhorse currency being the Djiboutian franc, pegged to the USD since 1949. These pieces are produced entirely for the numismatic export market, with no pretense otherwise.
The meerkat, native to southern Africa, has no particular connection to Djibouti.
