Beschrijving keerzijde A winged Genius, depicted in dynamic neoclassical style, stands before a classical temple fitted with a lightning rod, holding a lightning bolt aloft in his raised hand. At his feet lie a broken crown and sceptre, symbolising the triumph of science and liberty over tyranny. The full Latin legend ERIPUIT COELO FULMEN SCEPTRUMQUE TYRANNIS — 'He snatched the thunderbolt from the sky and the sceptre from the tyrants,' a phrase inspired by Turgot — encircles the design. The denomination 250 EURO and the attribution SCULPSIT ET DICAVIT AUG. DUPRE ANNO MDCCLXXXIV (1784) appear in the lower field, referencing the original medal created by Dupré.

Aanvullende informatie

Franklin spent nearly a decade in Paris as American minister to France, cultivating the alliance that kept the Continental Army supplied and ultimately funded. The Monnaie de Paris — the very institution that struck this coin — was operating continuously throughout that period, and Franklin visited it. He was not a passive tourist; he ran his own press at Passy and understood die-cutting and metallurgy well enough to hold an informed conversation with the mint's engravers.

The 500g format places this squarely in the Monnaie de Paris "Masterpiece" tier, produced in strictly limited quantities, typically under 99 pieces worldwide.
