The Sumatran rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) was already critically endangered by 2003, with the Malaysian population confined largely to Sabah. Featuring it on circulating coinage was a conservation signal as much as a design choice — Bank Negara had used the Wildlife series since 1989 to rotate endangered species onto the 25 sen denomination. The Malaysian population is now functionally extinct; Iman, the last known individual in the country, died in Sabah in May 2019.
