25 Rupees World Fisheries Conference

The World Fisheries Conference was held in Rome in 1983 under FAO auspices, the first intergovernmental conference dedicated entirely to fisheries policy at a global scale. Seychelles, whose exclusive economic zone covers roughly 1.4 million square kilometers of Indian Ocean, had direct and substantial interest in the outcomes — the conference addressed stock depletion and foreign fleet access, both pressing concerns for a small island nation whose waters were heavily targeted by distant-water fishing fleets from the Soviet Union, Japan, and France.

The gold version is the heaviest of the three metal variants struck for this commemorative program, and the low mintage figures typical of Seychellois gold issues from this period mean surviving examples rarely appear at auction.
