Nikulin spent decades as the face of the Moscow Circus — first as a clown, then as its director from 1982 until his death in 1997 — and his popularity in Russia has never meaningfully faded. This coin was issued as part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing animated film series, honoring his roles in Soviet comedies rather than his circus work.
