Sergei Simonov is best known for the SKS carbine, adopted by the Soviet Army in 1945 and among the first weapons to chamber the intermediate 7.62×39mm cartridge — the same round later used in Kalashnikov's AK-47. The two designers worked in direct competition, and it was largely political momentum behind the AK program that relegated the SKS to a secondary role despite its earlier adoption.
This piece belongs to the Bank of Russia's long-running "Weapons Designers of the Fatherland" bimetallic and base-metal series, issued annually across multiple denominations since 2012.
