The legend ОРУЖИЕ ВЕЛИКОЙ ПОБЕДЫ (WEAPONS OF THE GREAT VICTORY) curves along the upper circumference, while the inscription Ж.Я. КОТИН (J. Ya. Kotin), honouring the tank's principal designer Zhozef Yakovlevich Kotin, is positioned along the lower circumference. Josef Kotin spent most of his career at the Kirov Plant in Leningrad, where he led development of the KV-1 heavy tank — rushed into production so hastily before the German invasion that early examples arrived at the front with serious mechanical defects. He later headed the design bureau responsible for the IS-2, which became the Soviet Union's primary heavy tank for the assault on Berlin. This coin is part of the Bank of Russia's ongoing "Weapons of the Great Victory — Designers" series, launched in 2014 to coincide with anniversary commemorations of World War II.
