Aleksey Sudaev designed the PPS-43 submachine gun under siege conditions in Leningrad, producing a weapon that was cheaper and faster to manufacture than the PPSh-41 it largely replaced in front-line use. The PPS series required roughly half the machine hours to produce — a critical advantage when the city's factories were operating under artillery fire and acute material shortages.
Sudaev died in 1946 at 34, having never seen postwar recognition of his work. This coin is part of Russia's ongoing "Weapons of the Great Victory" bimetallic and cupro-nickel series launched in 2019.
