This coin commemorates the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's Vostok 1 flight on April 12, 1961 — a mission that lasted 108 minutes and for which Gagarin had essentially no manual control over the spacecraft, a deliberate decision by Soviet engineers who were uncertain how a human would respond to weightlessness. The Soviet space program's identity remained so classified at the time that Gagarin landed by ejecting from the capsule separately, a fact the Soviets concealed for years to protect their FAI altitude records.
