Transnistria — officially the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic — remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state, yet its Republican Bank has issued commemorative coinage since the early 1990s. This piece marks peacekeeping operations along the Dniester River, a reference to the Russian 14th Army's intervention in the 1992 armed conflict between Transnistrian and Moldovan forces — a ceasefire that effectively froze the conflict and entrenched the breakaway territory's de facto independence. Russian peacekeeping troops remain stationed there to this day.
