Pridnestrovie — the unrecognised breakaway state along the eastern bank of the Dniester River — has issued commemorative coins for decades despite lacking membership in any international monetary body. This piece honours Sevastopol as a Soviet "Hero City," a designation awarded in 1965 for the city's resistance during the 1941–1942 siege, one of the longest and most destructive in the war. The irony is pointed: Sevastopol was formally annexed by Russia in 2014, meaning Pridnestrovie — itself dependent on Russian political and economic support — is commemorating a city that no longer belongs to Ukraine, issued by a state that itself belongs to no one.
