Transnistria's "Hero City" series commemorates Soviet cities awarded the title for resistance during the Great Patriotic War — Minsk received the designation in 1974. The irony is considerable: Minsk is the capital of Belarus, a fully recognized sovereign state with no territorial or political connection to Transnistria, an unrecognized breakaway region of Moldova. The series is less a statement of shared history than an assertion of Soviet continuity as political identity.
