Transnistria's Hero City series commemorates Soviet cities awarded the title by a 1965 decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet — a designation covering cities where defensive battles of exceptional severity were fought during the Great Patriotic War. Leningrad endured a siege lasting 872 days, from September 1941 to January 1944, during which an estimated 800,000 civilians died, predominantly from starvation.
That this issue comes from a state unrecognized by any UN member carries its own weight. The Transnistrian Republican Bank operates a full numismatic program largely for collector export revenue, the coins having negligible domestic circulation use.
