Transnistria's unrecognized status — a breakaway state from Moldova since 1990, backed by Russian forces and unacknowledged by any UN member — gives its coinage an unusual character: legally issued by a central bank that most of the world refuses to recognize. The Cossack army series draws on the region's identification with Zaporozhian and Don Cossack heritage, a historical narrative the Tiraspol government has promoted deliberately to distinguish Transnistrian identity from Moldovan.
