Transdniestria — the narrow strip of territory between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border that declared independence from Moldova in 1990 but remains unrecognized by any UN member state — issues its own currency almost entirely for domestic use. Agroprombank is one of the republic's state-affiliated banks, and this coin belongs to a series of circulating commemoratives that double as institutional promotion within a closed monetary system.
