Issued by the Baumwollspinnerei Germania cotton spinning mill in Epe, this is a piece of Lagergeld — factory token currency used by industrial employers to pay workers in scrip redeemable only at company-controlled shops. The practice was widespread in German textile regions before and during World War I, particularly as zinc replaced brass and nickel for small-denomination coinage due to wartime metal restrictions. Workers paid in such tokens had little choice but to spend within the company's own retail infrastructure.
