| Additional information |
The UAE's shift to nickel plated steel for this denomination was driven by the same cost pressures that pushed mints worldwide away from solid cupronickel during the 2000s and 2010s — base metal prices made the older composition increasingly uneconomical for coins of this face value. The magnetic property is the practical consequence of the steel core, not a design choice, and it enabled automated sorting in retail and banking infrastructure already calibrated for magnetic coins from other GCC states.
