The Yamato was the largest battleship ever commissioned, displacing 72,000 tons at full load, and was sunk by American carrier aircraft on April 7, 1945 during Operation Ten-Go — a one-way mission with fuel enough only to reach Okinawa. Of her crew of 2,700, fewer than 280 survived. Solomon Islands waters were themselves the site of some of the Pacific War's most ferocious naval engagements, lending the issuer an oblique geographical connection to the subject.
