Costa Rica's 1970 Social Legislation coin commemorates the 25th anniversary of the country's landmark 1943 social reforms — a package pushed through by President Calderón Guardia that included a Labor Code, social security framework, and constitutional guarantees for workers, all enacted with the unlikely political alliance of the Catholic Church and the Communist Party. The coalition was pragmatic and deeply controversial, and the reforms it produced were far-reaching enough that Calderón's opponents used them as partial justification for the armed conflict that followed in 1948.
At 60mm and nearly 54 grams of fine silver, this is a substantial issue clearly intended for collectors rather than circulation.
