Part of the 125th anniversary of Confederation series, this issue was one of twelve provincial and territorial quarters released in 1992 — one for each province and territory plus a national design. The program was a deliberate federal effort to shore up national unity sentiment at a particularly fractious moment: the Charlottetown Accord, which attempted to address Quebec's constitutional status and Indigenous self-government, was put to a national referendum that same year and was defeated in October.

The British Columbia reverse was designed by Ago Aarand. Circulation strikes were produced in the hundreds of millions across the series, and raw examples are essentially without numismatic premium.
