The Netherlands Antilles maintained its own currency authority after the dissolution of the Currency Board of Curaçao and Dependencies in 1962, with the Bank van de Nederlandse Antillen assuming full monetary authority over an island group split across two distinct clusters — Curaçao and Bonaire to the south, and Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius to the north, nearly a thousand kilometers apart. Administering a unified currency across that geography was a practical oddity that persisted until Aruba's secession from the federation in 1986, which forced a redesign of the entire coinage series.
