Belmez is a small mining town in Córdoba province, and like hundreds of other Republican-held municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when the hoarding of coins — silver and copper alike — created an acute shortage of small change. These local Frente Popular emissions were never formally sanctioned by the Republican treasury in Madrid; they were improvised, often printed on whatever stock was available, and valid only within the issuing locality.
The Gari Mon reference is unassigned, suggesting this piece was either unknown or unverified at the time of cataloguing.
