Additional information

Belgium produced this coin in two parallel versions throughout the period — one with French text, one with Flemish — reflecting the country's legally mandated linguistic parity, a policy that grew increasingly contentious through the 1920s as the Flemish Movement pushed for administrative separation. Production was interrupted during the German occupation of World War I, when Belgian mint operations ceased and the occupiers issued their own zinc coinage. Post-war strikes resumed at the Brussels mint, though output figures varied sharply year to year depending on economic demand in the recovery period.
