The 24 Kreuzer denominations of this period were emergency-grade coinage, pushed through as Austria's finances collapsed under the cost of near-continuous warfare against revolutionary and Napoleonic France. By 1800, the Habsburg treasury was hemorrhaging silver, and billon issues like this one were a direct consequence — the alloy debased well below what Austrian coinage had maintained for generations. Franz II had been Holy Roman Emperor for less than a decade when this was struck, and monetary debasement would only accelerate; the Banco-Zettel paper currency crisis of 1811 was already in the making.
