Portugal's 2½ euro denomination was created specifically for the country's ongoing thematic collector series, a format with no real circulation precedent in European coinage. "The Yokes" belongs to the Portuguese World Heritage series, referencing the elaborately decorated ox yokes of the Minho region — woodworking and painted folk craft so regionally specific that UNESCO documentation of Portuguese intangible heritage repeatedly singles out the tradition.
