The colchas de Castelo Branco — embroidered bedspreads produced in the Beira Baixa region of Portugal — are among the most labor-intensive textile traditions in the country, with a single piece historically requiring years of work by a single embroiderer. The craft nearly disappeared during the twentieth century before sustained preservation efforts, including official recognition, brought it back to active production. This coin belongs to INCM's ongoing Portuguese World series documenting intangible cultural heritage, a program that has produced parallel issues in silver and base metal at the same face value.
