背面描述 The central device features a large cross of the Order of Christ — a plain cross overlaid on a cross pattée — set within a double tressure or annulet, with trefoil or floral ornaments issuing from the angles of the inner circle. This composition is rendered in high relief against a smooth field. The surrounding Latin legend, separated by pellets, reads ET·BRASILIÆ·DOMINUS·ANNO·1771·, proclaiming the king's lordship over Brazil and recording the regnal year. A bold denticulated border frames the entire design, consistent with the milled coinage style of the Lisbon Mint.

附加信息

José I's 2000 réis in gold emerged from a monetary reform decreed in 1747 — before José even took the throne — that rationalized Portugal's chaotic coinage system inherited from João V's extravagant reign. The Marquis of Pombal, who effectively governed Portugal after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake devastated the city and the royal family's nerve, oversaw much of this series' production. The mint itself had to be physically relocated and rebuilt following earthquake damage, introducing minor die inconsistencies that account for the several Bentes varieties catalogued across the type's nearly two-decade run.
