The angel, wings fully spread and rendered with exceptional feather detail, raises a sword in his right hand while bearing a cross-staff in his left, trampling the serpentine beast beneath his feet. The composition draws on the long tradition of the Angel gold coinage of England and closely references Raphael's celebrated depiction of Saint Michael. The surrounding Latin legend PER CRUCEM TUAM · SALVA NOS CHRISTE REDEMPTOR (Through Thy Cross, save us, O Christ our Redeemer) runs along the upper and left periphery of the field, with the engraver's initial SD appearing at lower right. |
