Mexico issued this coin in 1986 as part of a series tied to the FIFA World Cup hosted that year — a commercial bullion program intended to capitalize on international attention and generate hard currency revenue at a moment when the country was still reeling from the 1982 sovereign debt crisis. The two-ounce format was unusual for Mexican bullion production, which had long favored the Centenario and its fractional relatives.
