Issued as part of the Czech National Bank's long-running gold series documenting Bohemian architectural history, this piece commemorates the Cistercian monastery at Vyšší Brod, founded in 1259 by Vok I of Rosenberg. The Rosenberg family — one of the most powerful noble houses in medieval Bohemia — used the monastery as their dynastic burial site, and it remains one of the best-preserved Cistercian complexes in Central Europe, still occupied by monks today.
The series was among the first systematic gold programs issued by the CNB following Czech independence in 1993, with each denomination tied to a specific architectural period rather than a single monument.
