The outer silver border features eight raised relief depictions of dogs in various breeds and poses, interspersed with paw-print motifs. At the top of the border, gilt Chinese characters '戊戌' denote the sexagenary year. The curved English legend 'THE YEAR OF THE DOG' arcs along the lower portion of the jade disc, with the date '2018' in gilt numerals at the base of the field. |

The Bank of the Lao PDR has issued Chinese lunar calendar commemoratives since the 1990s, targeting collector markets in China, Hong Kong, and the diaspora rather than domestic circulation — these pieces are effectively export commodities from the moment of striking. The 2018 dog year issue follows a well-established pattern for the series, produced for a collector audience that never handled Lao currency in any other form.
