Djibouti has no native gorilla population — the silverback is entirely absent from the Horn of Africa — making this a purely commercial bullion issue aimed at the collector market rather than any national zoological or conservation program. The Banque Centrale de Djibouti has issued a number of oversized silver kilo pieces under its own authority, a practice common among smaller nations that license their issuing rights to private minting operations, predominantly European, which handle design, production, and distribution independently of the issuing government.
