Hungary qualified for UEFA Euro 2020 — played in 2021 due to the pandemic — after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Iceland in the November 2020 play-off final. It was their first European Championship appearance since 1972. The tournament itself saw Hungary placed in arguably the most punishing group in the competition's history, facing Portugal, France, and Germany, yet they held France and Germany to late equalisers before a 4–2 loss to Portugal ended their run.
