The University of Szeged traces its institutional origin to the Royal Hungarian Francis Joseph University, founded in Kolozsvár (now Cluj-Napoca, Romania) in 1872. Following Hungary's catastrophic territorial losses under the 1920 Treaty of Trianon, the university was relocated to Szeged, where it was reestablished in 1921 — one of several Hungarian academic institutions displaced by the postwar border redrawing. The centenary of that resettlement is precisely what this 2021 issue commemorates.
Albert Szent-Györgyi conducted his Nobel Prize-winning research on vitamin C at Szeged during the 1930s, a detail that gives the institution an outsized scientific reputation relative to its size.
